Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard
Jason Fields & Kevin Sheppard / Tröegs / Stone Cherry Chocolate Stout

Our most recent homebrewing rock stars are Jason Fields and Kevin Sheppard, creators of 2011's winning Cherry Chocolate Stout. You may have tried this intensely delicious brew even if you didn't attend the AHA rally—Jason and Kevin got to recreate their beer on our brewhouse and we distributed it nationally as Jason Fields & Kevin Sheppard / Tröegs / Stone Cherry Chocolate Stout. This dark beauty of a beer even traveled to Denver for the Pro-Am competition at the 2011 GABF!

That’s right, the winners from last year’s rally and competition got to brew their personal recipe on our brewhouse. This could be you, so get brewing!

Please RSVP on the AHA website—ALL attendees, whether competing, judging, or just tagging along, need to RSVP!

*You can pay your AHA membership fee at the door.

The Homebrewing Competition

We have our 40 entries, so the competition is now full! Please feel free to RSVP and participate in the tasting in judging if you still want to be a part of it.

Here's how it works:

  • Any homebrewer, whether a member of a homebrewing club or not, is encouraged to enter his or her beer in the competition
  • The rally and competition both kick off at 1pm in the gardens
  • AHA members will sample competing beers and vote on their favorites
  • Four finalists will be selected based on voting results
  • A panel of Stone judges will choose the winning beer through a blind tasting

Guidelines

  1. You must be located in one of the following counties: San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Bernardino or Riverside.*
  2. The competition is open to anyone, regardless of homebrew club affiliation. There are no “official club entries”.
  3. Only one beer may be entered per person.
  4. Don't wait to register! ONLY THE FIRST 40 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED! However, there will be a waiting list.
  5. You must be an AHA Member to enter or to taste and judge the day of the rally. And hey, you can join at the door!
  6. You must submit a full case for tasting and judging: either twelve 22oz bottles or twenty-four 12oz bottles. Submitting kegs is allowed, but you must bring your own draft system (CO2 and tapping equipment).
  7. When registering you MUST state whether you will be submitting your beer in bottles or keg. If this changes due to an emergency, you MUST NOTIFY US no later than Wednesday, February 29th so we can change the lineup.
  8. Bottles: All bottles must be brown or green glass with no paper labels. Raised "No Deposit" or bottle manufacturing codes are acceptable, but raised brewery names on bottles are not encouraged. Obliterate any lettering or graphics on the cap with a permanent black marker. Corked bottles will ONLY be accepted with a crown cap crimped over the cork. Stoppers with wire cages are also acceptable. Bottles not meeting these requirements will be disqualified.
  9. Bottled beers cannot be brought the day of the rally. Bottled beers MUST be submitted to the Stone Company Store no later than March 2nd. See store hours here
  10. Kegged beer submissions may be brought at any time prior to the event, or at 11am on the day of the rally provided that is stated on your registration form. See store hours here
  11. It is not guaranteed that the winning beer will be the exact beer that we make on our brewhouse—e.g., if the winning entry is a sour beer, we will not be able to brew it. Regardless, the winning brewer will select the recipe and work directly with Mitch Steele on the collaboration beer.
  12. We cannot accept recipes for bacterially soured beers, Brettanomyces beers or beers requiring extended aging (more than 60 days) for brewing on our system.
  13. * If you live outside of these five counties, we are sorry, but we can't accept your entry. Don't despair—you still have options: contact the AHA and get the ball rolling for a rally closer to home! http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/
